The "digitally-restored" front cover. |
Tomorrow's issue of The Beano, issue #3685, comes with a free digitally restored copy of the 1981 Beano special, as read by Doctor Who (which I'd assume is why they're doing it).
Here is what The Beano had to say over on their Facebook page:
"The secret revealed! Travel back in time with this week's issue of The Beano! It'll feel like the summer of 1981 all over again with a complete, digitally-restored copy of The Beano Summer Special completely FREE inside! The Beano no. 3685, on sale 15th May!"
I'd really like to see a reprint of the very firt Beano and Dandy summer special, from 1963. I couldn't afford a real one, so a reprint is the only way I'd get to read it.
UPDATE:
UPDATE:
Turns out that they are giving it away because it appeared in Doctor Who. Still, I'd like to see some other Summer Specials. Here's the cover...

THE DOCTOR! Not 'Doctor Who'! Gah! ;)
Ah, but if I said that - people might not know who I'm talking about!!! (excuses, excuses...)
Actually, the programme itself has named him as 'Doctor Who' many times in the credits so you're in good company. Bought that Beano earlier today, but I haven't looked at it yet.
Cor, we had that Beano in the shop today - at a glance I was put off by "The world ending with a parp" but now it seems like an essential purchase.
@Kid - I'm looking forwards to getting my copy. haven't got the 1981 SUmmer Special, so hopefully it will be a good read!
@TwoHeadedBoy - WHAT?!? Get back there and buy it immediately!
Got it today, and glad I did - even a few of the "regular" stuff in there's good - Dennis, Minnie and the Bash Street Kids especially!
The Smiffy strip in the Summer Special... I've definitely seen it before. Has it been reprinted in any of those annual Beano/Dandy things or something? Or possibly in one of those "retro" Summer Specials that've been out lately?
I'm afraid I can't tell you as I haven't got my copy yet. Being in New Zealand means that it can take a week or more to get here in the post! :(
